Uspensky Monastery…Foros Church…Swallows Nest Castle are just some of the 'must see' sights of Crimea!
Panorama Tours together with Ukraine International Airlines invite you to visit Crimea - a peninsula & region of Ukraine,
steeped in history, yet still unspoilt and just perfect for discovering whether it be in Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter.
Take time to visit the Swallows Nest Castle (one of the most photographed sights of Crimea and surprisingly small - now a restaurant),
the Livadia Palace (famous for the Yalta Conference which took place in 1945 and attended by Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt), the
Alupka Palace (also know as Vorontsov's Palace), Massandra Palace and its historical collection of wine and don't forget to take
a stroll along the Yalta Promenade.
For those interested in military history, then a visit to Sevastopol and Balaclava is a must.
The panoramic painting of the Defence of
Sevastopol 1854-1855 by the famous artist F.A.Rubo is just outstanding. Visit the Count's Pier, Nakhimov Square
and boulevard to the
Artillery Harbour and check out the Black Sea Fleet.
In Balaclava, take time to visit the former Secret Submarine Base of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet
in the Naval Museum Complex.
Completed in 1961, it was so secret, not even the locals knew about it! Hidden inside the Tavros Rock, there were dry docks,
repair shops, fuel tanks, food and water storage areas, dormitories and mess hall area and transport system. Submarines entered
by means of a secret entrance and along a waterway deep inside the rock, leaving through another secret exit in the south - both
of which were camouflaged with nets and rocks. Up to seven submarines could be accommodated at one time.
If time permits, take a short boat trip in the Balaclava harbour.
Chersonesus, the ancient Greek Settlement lies not far from Sevastopol and dates back to 6th Century BC. See beautiful Greek ruins on the
shore of the Black Sea including the remains of the Necropolis and ancient amphitheatre. Chersonesus is also a place revered by all
Eastern Orthodox, as it was the place where Prince Volodymyr of Kyiv was baptized and later brought Christianity to the Kievan Rus.
A beautiful Cathedral dedicated to St Volodymyr sits near the site of his baptism - although badly damaged during World War II,
since the fall of the Soviet Union the Ukrainian government has fully restored it to its former glory.
A visit to the Crimea is not complete without a visit to Bakhchisarai - once the capital of the mighty Crimean Khanate.
The Khan's palace
is a glorious example of medieval Islamic architecture, and is home to the Fountain of Tears, made famous by Pushkin in his poem
'The Fountain of Bakhchisarai'. See the Khan's Harem, private mosque and beautiful interior gardens. Visit the nearby Uspensky
cave monastery - an orthodox monastery that is carved into the mountainside which is located a mile away from the Khan's Palace.
