On the 26th April 1986, the world held its breath following the worst ever environmental disaster in history.
This took place at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, when the Reactor # 4 blew up during testing of the
generator. Nearly 9 tonnes of radioactive material (90 times as much as the Hiroshima bomb) was hurled
into the sky - just 100 kilometres from Kiev. The reactor was enclosed in a concrete and steel sarcophagus.
Programme:
09.00 hrs:
Depart from your hotel and drive north for approximately two hours to the border of the "Exclusion Zone".
11:00 hrs:
Pass the checkpoint "Dytyatky" and enter the "Exclusion Zone"
11:00 hrs - 16:00 hrs:
- Visit the site of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
- Observe the "Sarcophagus"
- Experience the peace and quiet of the ghost town Prypyat and visit some of the deserted buildings
- Visit the site of contaminated armoured personnel vehicles, helicopters and machinery
- Meet the self-settlers (elderly people who returned to live in the exclusion zone)
- Attend briefing by experts from Chornobylinterinform Government Agency with a question and answer session
16.00 hrs:
Exit the checkpoint "Dytyatky" and leave the "Exclusion Zone" and return to Kiev, arriving back in your
hotel at approx 18:00 hrs
On entering and leaving the "Exclusion Zone" all visitors undergo radioactivity control using Western equipment.
During your visit, you will only be allowed in those areas whereby the radiation level is within the permitted level.
